2023 Spring Concert: Music in Bloom

Our next event is our FREE Spring Concert, “Music in Bloom”. The concert takes place this Sunday, May 21, 2023, from 4:00pm to 5:15pm,  at Overbrook Presbyterian Church, 2605 Dumbarton Road, Richmond, Virginia. 

​This concert will feature some of Richmond's finest jazz and gospel artists including:  Weldon Hill, the legendary pianist James "Saxsmo" Gates, renowned saxophonist Lisa Winn Bryan, gospel vocalist Isaac Wilson, violin prodigy We look forward to seeing you at this memorable event!   There is no cost for this concert; however, seating is limited and thus you must register.




​Weldon Hill:  A musicologist, composer, and pianist, Dr..Weldon Hill is active as a performer, composer, and writer. He is most well known as a pianist, having shared the stage with artists such as Jon Faddis, Joe Williams, Steve Wilson, Marleana Shaw, Benny Carter, Jae Sinnett, Andrew Whit e, Ron Elliston, and Jo Marie Payton. His own piano trio has performed with Donald Harrison, Veronica Swift, Lori Williams, Renee Marie, Cecile Calloway, Denzal Sinclair, Andrew White, and Earnie Andrews, among others.  In addition to his own trio, Hill also performs regularly with the Virginia Symphony Jazz Orchestra and Symphony Pops and the United States Air Force Rhythm in Blues Jazz Ensemble. As pianist with the Great American Music Ensemble (an often-featured big band at the Kennedy Center and for National Public Radio) and with such artists as Herb Jeffries, Jimmy Heath, Benny Carter, Christian McBride, Ronnie Wells, Milt Hinton, and Ethel Ennis. His discography includes recordings with the Great American Music Ensemble, Plunky and Oneness, Bill McGee, James Gates and the Weldon Hill Trio.

​James Saxsmo Gates:  James “Saxsmo” Gates is one of the Virginia’s most celebrated musicians.  He plays sax with a flaming passion that is evident in every note. His undeniable virtuosity along with his bell-like tone quality ignites a fire that illuminates the hearts and so uls of all jazz enthusiasts. He has played and traveled extensively in the United States and abroad with such notable artists as Larry Carlton, Jeff Lorber, Alex Bugnon, Joe Kennedy, Jr., Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, Dizzy Gillespie, Clark Terry, Walter Davis, Jr., Walter Bishop, The Temptations, Dianne Reeves, Jimmy Cobb, Larry Willis, Roberta Flack, Marvin Gaye, Lou Rawls and The Main Ingredient.

​Lisa Winn Bryan: A native of Baltimore, Dr. Winn has opened for several different artists (Richard Smallwood, John P. Kee, Michelle Williams of Destiny’s Child, Donnie McClurkin, India Arie, Twinkie Clark and Shirley Caesar to name a few) and worked with a variety of gospel choirs, most recently on, You Alone, the 2014 Arkansas Mass Gos pel Choir recording which will air on the Bobby Jones Gospel Show in the fall.  She recorded her first CD with Stellar Award nominee, Ben Tankard and also directed a 125 voice college choir in the reprise of Nikki Giovanni’s, “Truth is On Its Way.”  Lisa had the best more recent honor to sing for Author Toni Morrison and the late Maya Angelou at VA Tech in October 2012 as Dr. Niki Giovanni and Dr. Joanne Gabbin paid tribute to both renowned writers and poets.

​Isaac Wilson, is a rising star in the symphony world.   Isaac is a12 year old violin prodigy, who is a member of the Richmond Symphony Youth Orchestra and is often featured as a soloi st.   Isaac is also the recipient of our Classics Through the Ages program. He was in first place, violinist in the Richmond Symphony Youth Orchestra Program 2021 Digital Competition and he has been featured in several of their concerts. Most recently, he was the soloist in the Richmond Symphony’s 2023 Martin Luther King Jr. holiday event along with Brown Ballerinas for Change and Virginian composers Adolphus Hailstork and Damien Geter. Issac also entertained guests and sponsors at the Donors Reception of our 40th anniversary fundraiser event, Off the Wall and Onto the Stage; Dancing the Art of Jonathan Green at the Dominion Energy Center this past March.
